The Diagnostic Evaluation

This is carried out before treatment starts, to assess the type of orthodontic problem, the treatment procedures indicated and the fees involved.  Two visits are generally required, the first to obtain the diagnostic records and the second for the discussion.  At the discussion visit, the diagnostic records will have been reviewed and a treatment plan tailored to the indiviual needs of the patient will be presented for your approval.  This is based on many factors, including anticipated patient growth and normal treatment response.

Treatment Planning and Progress Reports

  • An in-depth analysis and detailed explanation of the problems present will be given to you and your dentist prior to any treatment, so that you will be able to participate in the decision-making process.

  • At each stage you will be fully advised in advance of all procedures and the any potential fees involved.

  • You will have the opportunity at each appointment to discuss the progress of treatment, if you should so wish.

Length of Treatment

Because we are working with an individual and because good treatment takes time, we can only give a considered opinion about the length of the treatment, ranging from a few months to 2 years, on average treatment takes around 20 months, although less comprehensive treatment for an adult may be much less. The time estimate is based on experience of individuals with similar problems, normal growth and good co-operation.

Appointment Times

Appointments are usually 20 - 30 minutes long, although initially two or three longer appointments may be required to put on all the braces. Subsequently visits are generally at 5 - 6 week intervals. Most appointments are made at convenient times as far as possible, but parents should be aware that appointments may need to be made during school hours.
